Bogota is a big city and when moving to the city to start your new life as an English teacher in Colombia it can seem a little overwhelming. Where are the safe areas? Where is the best place to live? Where should I avoid? This article will provide a guide for you to identify the different areas of Bogota and decide where you would like to live in the city when you start working as an English teacher in Colombia.
In Bogota, bills and utilities vary in price depending on the neighbourhood you live in: each neighbourhood has a estrato number ranging from 1 to 6. Estrato 6 is where you will pay the highest bills and utilities. So keep in mind the estrato number when choosing where to live to avoid surprisingly high bills.
La Candelaria (the historic centre)
La Candelaria is the historic centre of Bogota, this is where the majority of tourist attractions are located such as museums, the cable car to the Monserrate,and historic and colonial buildings. La Candeleria is also home to a large amount of government buildings, bank headquarters and historical plazas. This area tends to be a pretty busy place to be and isn’t always the safest area to walk around especially after dark, due to its proximity to the poorer neighbourhoods and large amount of people. While this area is great to explore during the day and experience Bogota’s culture or shopping markets it isn’t such a great place to live, due to the security risk. La Candelaria is located in estrato 2 – 4 depending on the exact location of the apartment: an apartment in this area can range from 700,000COP to 1.7 million for a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment and a single room can range from 400,000COP to 700,000COP, it’s not the ideal place to be based as an English teacher in Colombia or Bogota, due to the security issues.
The International Centre is located between Calle 26 and 34 and between Carrera 7 and 14. This neighbourhood is home to many new official buildings, business headquarters and universities. This area is a relatively safe area to live in and it’s connected well through the Trasmilenio and bus routes. The International Centre is a good location to live if you are working as an English teacher in Colombia in a university, due to its proximity to the university district and good transportation routes. 1 or 2 bedroom apartments in the neighbourhood can range from 1.1 million COP to 1.7 million COPs a month depending on the location and the age of the apartment building. Rooms in this are can range from 400,000 peso’s to 700,000 peso’s. The International Centre is located in estrato 4, meaning relatively inexpensive utilities and bills. The International Centre is a good place to live while working as an English Teacher in Colombia, due to its location to the public transport system.
Chapinero is located between Calle 34 and 72 and between Carrera 7 and 16, and is very popular with expats and young professionals. Chapinero is home to a large number of bars and restaurants – it’s a lively and fun place to live for young people. The neighbourhood has good transport links: due to the Transmilenio and bus service on Carrera 7 it’s easy to get to most parts of the city from the area. True caution should be used when walking around some parts of Chapinero at night, but it’s generally a safe place to live. You can rent a room in Chapinero from between 500,000COP and 800,000COP depending on area and building age. It’s also located in estrato 4, meaning bills and utilities aren’t high. Chapinero is a good place to live for lively and social expats and teachers, and it’s a good place to live while working as an English teacher in Colombia mainly because of its easy access to transportation to all areas of the city.
Chapinero Alto is the neighbourhood located east of Carrera 7 between Carrera 1 and 7 (close to the mountains) and between Calle 40 and 70. This neighbourhood is home to a number of tall high rises, new buildings and upperclass apartments. This neighbourhood is usually safe to walk around at all times of the day, and some buildings go high up into the mountains and have amazing views over the city. While the south of this neighbourhood is popular for students, due to its proximity to major universities, the neighbourhood gets more prestigious (and expensive) the further north you go. A typical apartment in this area can range from 1million peso’s to 2.5 million for a 1 or two bedroom apartment, rooms can range from 600,000 to 1 million peso’s a month depending on the area and buildings. Chapinero Alto is located in either estrato 4 or 5 depending on the exact location and building. It is connected to public transportation routes via carrera 7, but it is a 15 -20 minute walk to the closest Transmilenio station. Living in this neighbourhood as a English teacher in Colombia is a good, despite the distance from public transport systems.
Chico is one of the most expensive neighbourhoods in the city, it is located between Calle 72 and 100 and between Carrera 7 and 15. Chico is home to some of Bogota’s upperclass areas such as Parque 93, Parque Virrey, Andino shopping centre and Zona T. This area is one of the safest in the city and is home to many commercial buildings and office blocks. Chico is an area in which, as an English Teacher in Colombia, you may have a large amount of classes due to the number of financial and business offices in the area. Chico is located in estrato 6, meaning the apartments have the highest utilities and bills in the city. Rooms in this are can range from between 800,000COP to 1.5 million peso’s depending on exact location. If you are working as an English teacher in Colombia this is a very nice place to live, although the apartments have higher monthly rent, you maybe able to walk to some classes but taking public transport would require a short walk.
While the are many more areas and neighbourhoods within the city these are the most popular with people looking to become a English teacher in Colombia and especially Bogota, due to the areas in which companies offices are located and the proximity to classes.
